Dear Fellow Republicans,
Christmas has a way of bringing us back to what truly matters.
When I think of Christmas, I still picture myself as a child running downstairs early in the morning, filled with anticipation to see what Santa had brought. Like many families, the gifts marked “from Mom and Dad” were just as meaningful, if not more so. And truthfully, my dad was often just as surprised as I was when those presents were opened, since my mom typically handled the Christmas shopping each year.
Those mornings were filled with laughter, tradition, and familiar debates that seem to return every December, including whether Die Hard really counts as a Christmas movie. Looking back, it was not the presents themselves that made those moments special, but the sense of family, gratitude, and togetherness that surrounded them.
This Christmas season has also reminded us of the fragility of life and the cost of service. Our state is mourning the tragic loss of a Delaware State Trooper who gave his life in the line of duty. At a time meant for celebration, this loss weighs heavily on our hearts. We pause to honor his sacrifice, to pray for his family, loved ones, and fellow troopers, and to reaffirm our gratitude for the men and women of the Delaware State Police and all first responders who place themselves in harm’s way so that our communities may live in peace and safety. Their service is a solemn reminder that security and freedom are not abstract ideals, but responsibilities carried by real people every day.
That same spirit of service can be found throughout Sussex County during the holidays. It is visible in our churches, in community halls, in small acts of kindness, and in the countless volunteers who give their time and energy to serve others. Rooted in faith and guided by a sense of civic duty, the county offers its sincere thanks to all those who have been active this past year. Your humility, dedication, and willingness to serve have strengthened the community we are entrusted to care for.
Christmas reminds us that faith calls us to action, not through recognition, but through quiet service and love of neighbor. As we celebrate the birth of Christ, may this season renew our faith, strengthen our families, and deepen our commitment to caring for one another.
From my family to yours, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a blessed and peaceful holiday season. May God continue to watch over Sussex County and all who call it home.
