She Didn’t Give Birth To Me. But She’s My Mom.

Dear Sussex County Republicans,

Three days before my first birthday, I was adopted.

My mother didn’t carry me for nine months.

She didn’t bring me into this world.

She didn’t share my DNA.

But she chose me. She showed up for every scraped knee, every late-night worry, every tough conversation. She gave me what every child deserves: stability, devotion, and unconditional love.

She is my mom. No qualifiers. No exceptions.

And she’s not alone.

Across Sussex County and this country, thousands of women mother with their hearts, not just their biology. Foster moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, aunts, and adoptive mothers carry out the sacred role of “mom” every single day. They deserve recognition, not erasure.

That is why I cannot stay silent, and why we cannot stay silent, when Alonna Berry, the Democratic candidate for Delaware’s 20th House District, proudly refers to herself on her campaign website as a “birthing person.”

That term doesn’t include more people. It erases them.

It reduces motherhood to a clinical act. Cold and dismissive.

It overlooks the women who earn the title of “mom” through love, sacrifice, and everyday courage.

Motherhood is not a political experiment.

It is not a label to be sanitized.

It is sacred. It is human. It is worth defending.

This kind of ideology isn’t coming from moms. It is being pushed by radical activists. And it’s already showing up in campaign platforms and public policy. If we stay quiet, we risk erasing the very women who raised us.

So today, the Sussex County Republican Party is launching a countywide effort to speak out and celebrate the true meaning of motherhood:

📸 Stand with us

• Post a photo of your mom—biological or not—on Facebook or Instagram

• Use the hashtag #CallHerMom

• Tag @SussexCountyRepublicans and help us celebrate every kind of motherhood

Let’s send a message that is personal, proud, and unapologetic.

We see the moms who step in.

We see the grandmas who raise their grandkids.

We see the foster moms who hold hearts they didn’t grow.

We see the stepmoms who love without obligation.

We honor them.

We call them what they are.

Call her Mom.

With conviction,

Daniel Willis
