Dear Sussex County Republicans,
Tuesday’s District 20 special election was a tough one. Coming up just 121 votes short is never easy, and I know many of you are feeling disappointed, frustrated, or even angry. That is okay. It is completely normal to feel that way when you care as much as we do about our community and our future.
But we should also feel proud.
Dr. Nikki Miller and her campaign team ran a campaign rooted in heart, integrity, and purpose. Nikki represents everything we look for in a candidate. She is experienced, compassionate, and courageous. She inspired thousands, stayed true to her principles, and carried herself with strength and grace every step of the way. We are lucky to have her in our corner, and I believe this is just the beginning of her impact.
Despite going up against the full weight of the Democrat machine, we closed the gap from 245 votes last year to just 121 this year. That is real movement. That is progress. And it is something every single one of us should be proud of.
Yes, turnout reached record levels for a special election. But remember, 100 percent of a grape is still smaller than 10 percent of a watermelon. This is a seat we have held before, and it is one we know we can win again.
To everyone who gave their time, made phone calls, knocked on doors, donated, or simply cheered us on — thank you. Your work mattered, and it continues to matter.
Looking ahead, we know we need to grow. That is why we are launching a new recurring event: Postcard Writing Parties. After reviewing updated voter registration data, we will host countywide gatherings where we write and send welcome postcards to newly registered Republicans in Sussex County. It is a simple but powerful way to connect with new voters and remind them that the Republican Party is here to support them.
This campaign also gave us an opportunity to reflect and improve. It helped us stress-test our operations and gather honest feedback about how we support and evaluate candidates, in coordination with the state party and House Republican leadership. That information will help us build a stronger foundation for 2026.
We are also actively following up on reported irregularities from this election. Both the county and state Republican Party have already contacted the appropriate officials. We will keep you informed as we receive responses and take any necessary next steps.
We may not have crossed the finish line this time, but we are far from finished. If you care about the future of Sussex County and want to be part of what comes next, we want you on the team. Whether you have time, talent, or simply the drive to make a difference, there is a place for you here.
Let this moment be our fuel, not our finish line.
With appreciation and determination,
Daniel Willis,
Chairman, Sussex County Republican Party
