Candidates for Sussex County Council District 5 John Rieley (Republican) and Jill Hicks (Democrat) will field questions from the audience at a public forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Sussex County on Thursday, Sept. 24, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Indian River Senior Center, 214 Irons Avenue, Millsboro.
Sussex County Council District 5 covers central Sussex County, primarily representing the communities of Georgetown and Millsboro. The responsibilities of the county council include establishing policies for the health, safety and welfare of county residents, adopting an annual budget for county government operations, and enacting plans for county growth, development and employment.
Following brief opening statements by the candidates, the forum will focus on questions from the audience. The League encouraged everyone who is attending the forum to bring a written question, legibly printed on a 3-by-5-inch card. Notecards and pencils for posing questions will also be available at the door and from monitors in the aisles throughout the program. ASL Connections will provide sign-language interpretation.
To maintain a neutral atmosphere at the forum, the League prohibits electioneering in the room, including wearing clothing, hats, buttons or other items promoting either candidate. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that does not support or oppose any political party or candidate for elective office. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 election is Saturday, Oct. 10. Go to VOTE 411.org or sussexlwv.org for more information on voting in Delaware.
