Yet Another Example of 1 Party Control

Updated: Feb 7

Sen. Gerald Hocker

Yesterday evening, Senate Democrats introduced SB 228 and SB 230 and, by around 10 p.m., rushed both bills onto today’s Senate Executive Committee agenda.

Republican members of the Special Property Reassessment Committee were never consulted or given advance notice beyond being told the bills would be introduced.

The business community, who is impacted by this legislation, found out roughly 45 minutes prior to the committee hearing that these bills were on the agenda.

This is not how a transparent or responsible government is supposed to work.

When Republican members raised legitimate concerns during committee, both about the substance of the bills and, more importantly, the speed and lack of transparency in the process, they were met with dismissiveness from the Majority.

These bills may have merit, or they may require amendments. We simply don’t know, because neither lawmakers nor stakeholders outside the Majority party were given adequate time to review or vet them.

This is yet another example of one party exercising far too much control over the legislature.
