Sussex County Begins Issuing Annual Property Tax Bills

The County’s Business Services Office has begun issuing tax bills for the Fiscal Year 2027. Each August, Sussex County government sends bills to the owners of approximately 206,000 parcels. Bills can be viewed online at: https://sussexcountyde.munisselfservice.com/css/citizens/RealEstate/Default.aspx.

Annual bills include county property taxes, county sewer and water, tax ditch, and street lighting fees, where applicable. Additionally, tax bills include local school district taxes, which vary by district. Sussex County is required to bill property owners for school taxes on behalf of the districts, with those funds then forwarded to the state. Approximately 10% of the typical residential tax bill is for county property taxes, with the remainder dedicated to public education.

Many taxpayers have their annual taxes paid out of escrow accounts maintained by their mortgage lenders. Escrow customers do not receive paper bills. However, billed amounts are available online by visiting www.sussexcountyde.gov/pay-your-bill and selecting the “Sussex County Self Service site” link on the page. If escrow customers have any questions regarding the status of their accounts, they should contact their lenders or enter their parcel ID in the County’s EscrowCheck tool at www.sussexcountyde.gov/EscrowCheck to see real-time tax payment status.

Property owners not receiving a paper bill and who have a current escrow account are encouraged to check with their lenders or use the EscrowCheck tool to see real-time tax payment status.

Tax payments are due by September 30. Sussex County accepts payments by cash, check, money order, and debit or credit cards. They can be paid online, in person, by mail, or by phone.
