September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month. Being ready for unexpected events--whether storms, power outages, or other emergencies--can make a critical difference when a crisis strikes.

Emergency planning experts emphasize the importance of evaluating personal risk, understanding whether one lives in an evacuation zone, considering the needs of all household members (including pets), and developing a communication plan in case of separation during an emergency.

Sussex County local libraries are hosting “Are you Ready?” informational sessions and a showcase of sample disaster kits. Here are the locations and dates for the sessions:

• Greenwood Library – 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9th

• Milton Library – 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th

• South Coastal Library – 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23rd

You can find additional guidance on emergency kits, preparedness planning, and hazard awareness by visiting the Emergency Management division’s preparedness webpage at sussexcountyde.gov/emergency-preparedness.
